I just got back from a week in sunny, beautiful California (wonderful pictures to come in the next couple of weeks)....and settling back into a Pittsburgh winter has been a shock to the system. Don't get me wrong...I love Pittsburgh...and I have lived here long enough to know what to expect come mid-November to March. However, every year I inevitably find myself beginning to trade 15 more minutes of sleep for doing my make-up in the morning, have more sweats in my wardrobe rotation than I care to admit, and a night on the couch under my blankets sounds way better than any happy hour. I think many of us start to fall into this sort of rut around February. The holidays are over, there's nothing but winter clearance left in the stores, and we hunker down and wait for the sweet thaw of spring. Since we aren't able to go into a full hibernation, I decided to do some research and see what's going on in the city this February. It turns out a lot....like seriously ALOT! So I decided to compile a list of all the best things to see, do, and enjoy this February in Pittsburgh. Hopefully, it inspires you to put on some grown up pants for a night and venture out into this beautiful place we call home! If you're not from Pittsburgh, I would love to hear what exciting events are going on in your hometown this time of year!
1. So you love Broadway, but the 7 hour drive to NYC is a bit much this time of year? Travel to downtown Pittsburgh instead to take in one of these incredible performances!
Beauty & the Beast (Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre) - Benedum Center - February 6th - 15th
The Phantom of the Opera - Benedum Center - February 18th - March 1st
My Fair Lady - (Pittsburgh Public Theater) - O'Reilly Theater - January 22nd - February 22nd
2. Remember your career goals for 2015? Get moving on them with a little networking!
Hotel Monaco Grand Opening & Business Networking / Cocktail Reception - presented by the Pittsburgh Social Exchange - February 18th at 6 PM - This is one I already bought "early bird" tickets for and am so excited about! Hotel Monaco is a new "boutique" hotel downtown and is certain to be one of the most sought-after new event venues this year. Come rub elbows (and pass out a few business cards) with more than 400 other professionals in Pittsburgh. Sample hors d'oeuvres and appetizers from the brand new restaurant, "The Commoner." And who doesn't love door prizes and a drawing?!
3. Honestly, what's better than having fun and supporting a great cause while you do it? A few of my favorite non-profits are having some fabulous events this month!
Girl's Hope 22nd Annual Hearts and Hopes Event presented by the Young Leadership Board - Diesel Club Lounge - February 6th from 5:30 - 9:30 PM - the YLB is a group of young professional women in Pittsburgh who support Girl's Hope through a combination of volunteering, mentorship, and fundraising. This event includes drink tickets, hors d'oeuvres, Chinese and silent auctions, and plenty of dancing! All proceeds support this worthwhile cause.
Cupids & Canines presented by Camp Bow Wow and the Western PA Humane Society - Lexus Club at PNC Park - February 7th from 7:30 - 11 PM. Guests will enjoy hors d'oeuvres, live music, and casino games in a Vegas themed setting. Last year this event raised over $24,000 for our furry friends!
4. Why not eat and drink your way around the city? Pittsburgh's food scene and craft breweries are gaining more and more attention nationally. Lucky for us, we can sample all this great food and drink in our own backyard!
The Brews & The Bees Brew Tour - February 7th at 11:30 AM - This tour is a fun way to experience two new craft businesses in the region! Guests enjoy transportation to both Hitchhiker Brewing Company in Mt. Lebanon and Apis Mead & Winery in Carnegie. Sample some craft creations while guides take you on a tour of each location. They even provide coolers for safe transport of all your delicious purchases!
Flavor of Pittsburgh: Pittsburgh's Popular Food Culture Tour - February 27th at 10 AM - Eat the day away on this food tour! Includes food samplings at local eateries and behind-the-scenes stories!
Lights, Camera, Pittsburgh! The Official Pittsburgh Film Office Movie Tour - February 14th & 21st - Love movies? Take a tour around the city - stopping at places where a number of movies have been filmed!
5. February is all about L-O-V-E. Why not plan a Girl's Night Out with all your fave ladies to watch one of the spiciest movies of the year?
Ladies Night Out – 50 Shades of Grey - Southside Works - This event was so popular that tickets for the February 13th event sold out almost immediately. Fear not though - a second date has been added on February 20th! Confession time...I haven't read the book (gasp)...but this event still sounds incredibly fun! A ticket to the event gets you into the pre-show happy hour with cocktails, hors d'oeuvres, giveaways, spa treatments, and admission to the movie. Even better - part of the proceeds benefit the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
6. What better way to set your sights on spring then to take in a flower show!
Orchid and Tropical Bonsai Show - Phipps Conservatory - January 17th - March 1st - Phipps Conservatory is one of those unique gems in Pittsburgh. This newest exhibit features beautiful orchids and tropical bonsai trees. For those who are really ambitious, there are even "how-to" presentations on select dates that will demonstrate what it takes to care for your own orchids and bonsai.
7. Who knew this was a real thing?
National Girl Scout Cookie Day - Fifth Avenue Place - February 27th from 11 AM - 2 PM - Two words: Thin Mints. That's all I need to know.
Still Bored? There's a ton more going on...
Bush at Stage AE - February 17th at 7 PM
Ice Rink Still Open at PPG Place - until March 1st
My Snarky Valentine - Children's Museum (this is a 21+ event!) - February 12th from 6:30 to 9:30 PM
Cupid's Undie Run - Station Square - February 14th at 2:00 PM
Munchkin Mondays - Carnegie Science Center - for Kids! - Mondays throughout February
