West Overton Barn Wedding

Before the year comes to an end, I wanted to squeeze in some photos and details from the last wedding I coordinated in 2015.  This was one of my favorite of the year mainly because Gretta and BJ were so amazing to work with.  They were open to advice, super appreciative of everything, and were organized and on top of the details while remaining laid back and calm…a wedding planner’s dream couple right?  Their focus was clearly on each other and their friends and family – which is always a beautiful thing to see.  The wedding and reception took place at West Overton Barn on Halloween.  When I initially heard that they would be holding the reception in a barn (that doesn’t have heat) at the end of October, I momentarily panicked as I pictured frozen wedding guests huddled around space heaters with chattering teeth.  Luckily, the weather cooperated and it couldn’t have been a more gorgeous day.  Gretta walked down an aisle covered in fallen leaves and the couple recited their vows underneath a canopy of trees in the most gorgeous fall golds and reds.  Love and laughter were definitely in the air that day…

Just a warning...I had a really hard time choosing just a few photos from this one - so I figured what the heck - who doesn't love looking at wedding photos?!  All photos are courtesy of the awesome team at Hot Metal Studios unless noted.  The photos below are of some of the buildings at West Overton Village.  I’ve coordinated my share of barn weddings, but West Overton is a totally unique venue.  We had access to not only the barn, but the old distillery museum, and other buildings on the property.

I know people have very strong opinions for and against doing a "first look."  I personally am a huge proponent for a myriad of reasons, but moments like the one below really sum it up.  I mean seriously look at his face!!

A couple of my faves of the bridal party...

Fall colors make for the most beautiful bouquets and I love, love, love adding succulents!

Gretta and BJ incorporated their wedding colors into the reception with navy linens and coral napkins.  Many times when I am working with a DIY bride, I get a little nervous.  However, Gretta and her mom were absolutely amazing and I would absolutely hire them in the future to make some of these amazing paper flowers.  They put the flowers in growlers (all from different breweries that Gretta and BJ had visited) and used these as centerpieces on the tables.

I mentioned earlier that Gretta and her family were DIY pros.  I absolutely loved their idea for escort cards.  They used mini bottles of wine and made custom labels.  Each guest got to keep their very own “love potion” as a favor.

Although they got married on Halloween, Gretta and BJ didn’t want to go all out with a Halloween theme.  Instead, we opted for some simple touches like a photo area with Halloween masks and props, a few well placed skulls, and some Halloween themed cookies.

Carson’s catering provided the food and did an awesome job of coming up with creative food stations.  They even did a “Pittsburgh station” complete with pirogues and other hometown favorites.  Oh and the comfort food station had stuffing cups filled with mashed potatoes!  Omg.  For desserts, guests could indulge in cake, cookies, and a “create your own cheesecake” station with topping bar! Along with unique food options, I loved the idea of bringing the small beer truck inside where guests could help themselves to drinks throughout the night.

If you've been to a Pittsburgh wedding, I don't have to tell you about the importance of the cookie table.  This one was impressive..and tasty!

Gotta love when your couple has a great sense of humor!
